Perfect hoe: weeding, digging, breaking clods

Love this tool and have used it for 5+ years. I use it to plant (the narrow end easily pushes deep into the soil) seedlings, aerate, to make a seed trench, to break up clods and knock the soil off the roots of large weeds, and of course to weed. It takes out deep tap roots with its narrow end, and with the broad edge slices small weeds just under the surface. Very easy to maneuver around plant bases. Just the perfect hand tool.

My right hand tool!

I’m here to buy another of these, it’s my favorite tool ever & the most useful. Sadly, the one I’ve been using for . . . gosh, twenty-five years is lost and I cannot garden without it! What a value for sheer practicality and versatility.

Fast, precise weeding

I bought my first Nejiri Gama hoe years ago at Smith and Hawken, and was so pleased to find it available here. This is the best ever for speeding the weeding. The edge is sharp and the angle of the head is perfect for cutting just under the surface of the soil. It is also great for digging out deeper roots of persistent weeds. My only improvement has been to paint the handle white because it kept getting lost when I set it down in my way-too-closely-planted gardens. I bought one for my son (an amazing gardener) and he fell in love with it, too, so I’m ordering more so he and his wife don’t have to fight over it, and as a gift to encourage his friend who is a brand new gardener (and a spare for me, too) There may be something like this available with a long enough handle to be able to stand up while weeding, but for closely-packed plantings, it’s the best I’ve come across and in daily use the entire growing season.
